Grading rules

Students must show a good knowledge of the requirements from the grading syllabus for their attempted grade.

Demonstrate good strong basics, i.e. stances, techniques, posture and especially the kiai (shout).

Technique - this must show the development as you progress through the grades and show improved level of skill.

Kata - this is the single most important part of your grading. Through Kata the Instructor can clearly identify strengths and weaknesses.

Kumite - as you progress through the grades the examiner is looking for increased levels of ability. These fights are not tournament fights. The traditional techniques of Goju Ryu as a martial art is what is being looked for.

The fights must be well controlled, with no dangerous techniques to be used. This includes groin kicks, thigh kicks or attacks to the throat as well as dangerous throws.

Junior grades (under 15)

White belts (10th kyu) through to Blue Green 2 (4th kyu) must have a minimum of 12 classes between gradings.

Blue and Brown belts are only eligible for grading every 6 months and must have a minimum of 24 classes between gradings.

At Shodan Ho level the student must be training for at least 1 year before grading for black belt.

Senior grades (15 and over)

White belts (10th kyu) through to Brown belt (1st kyu) must have a minimum of 24 classes between gradings.
